We Will Not Be Silent! Since October 7th, we have learned of the unspeakable horrors and violence the terrorist organization Hamas perpetrated against the Jewish people. It is difficult to comprehend the level of inhumanity. Still, we know that scores of Jews, some not even a year old, and others who are older adults, remain hostage in Gaza. It has been 75 years since the end of the Holocaust that the Jewish people have faced such barbarism.Β Β Β At Temple Emanu-El, we have had time to mourn, comfort, and find strength in our Jewish community. In the aftermath of that black Shabbat, antisemitism has grown exponentially. Tragically, many of us have already witnessed our peers and colleagues, on college campuses and at work, celebrating the murder of innocent civilians. Even worse, we may have already noticed or heard threats against the Jewish community.Β We will not be silent in the face of antisemitism.Β We may find ourselves in the uncomfortable position of having to be the sole … [Read more...]

Our Torah portion this week shares: βOn the day that the Tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the Tabernacle, the Tent of the Pact; and in the evening it rested over the Tabernacle in the likeness of fire until morning. It was always so: the cloud covered it, appearing as fire by night. Whenever the cloud lifted from the Tent, the Israelites would set out accordingly; and at the spot where the cloud settled, there the Israelites would make camp.β* Torah is amazing, we read it every year and like the Sages of Pirkei Avot remind us, we turn it, turn it, and turn it again because we change and evolve every year, yet the ancient text remains. This year, I read the text of this weekβs Torah portion from a bench by the lake at URJ Camp Coleman, where Iβm serving as a rabbi on faculty for the week. Camp doesnβt operate quite like the strict schedule of the Tabernacle. Camp has an amazing βgo with the flowβ culture that disrupts the rigid schedules that most of our day-to-day lives … [Read more...]

A Message from Your Co-Chairs Giving thanks. Being mindful. Experiencing a sense of gratitude. More than an abundant feast, the American holiday of Thanksgiving reminds us to pause, catch our breath and take stock of our blessings. This year, as many of us gather in-person with family and friends, we have reasons to celebrate. We are part of a caring and devoted Kehillah, our Temple Emanu-El community, each of us connected to the other in some meaningful way. The Social Justice Committee, in particular, has enjoyed a busy and purposeful year. We made significant inroads feeding the food-insecure in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. We helped vulnerable women and children by providing meals, coats and reading materials. We have done our part to be good stewards of the earth and make better use of our natural resources. We have supported Afghan refugees who are carving out new lives for themselves and their families in the Atlanta area. We have planted daffodils to grow our garden and … [Read more...]

Letter From The Co-Chairs Welcome to the second edition of Tikkun Olam Times, a living, breathing space to inform, educate and advocate for Social Action and Justice. Since the first edition of TOT on June 9, a head-spinning number of events and decisions have occurred. Demonstrations urging racial equality swept the nation and the world. The Supreme Court determined that it is, βunlawful for an employer to fail to hire or discharge an individual β¦ because of such individualβs race, color, religion, sex or national origin.β The Supreme Court also upheld the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Here at home, the Georgia House and Senate passed a Hate Crimes Bill, HB426, that Governor Kemp signed into law. All of this activity while we are still in the middle of a global pandemic. Wendy Frank & Julie Mokotoff At Carnival With A Cause March 8, 2020 Against this backdrop of challenge and change, Judaism provides a constructive framework to guide our thoughts … [Read more...]
