Marking Yom HaShoah
Marking Yom HaShoah This morning, millions of Israelis paused their day and stood at attention. Drivers pulled their cars over, those shopping at the shuk for Shabbat set down their bags, and students stood silently at their school ceremonies. Today is a day we remember. Today is Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. In America, we participate in vigils, light candles at home, and share stories of family members who survived and those who did not. We continue to speak about the tragedies of the past so that history never repeats itself. After the attack on the Jewish community of Poway last Shabbat, we mourn the loss of life at the hands of hatred once again targeting our community for simply for being Jewish. On Yom HaShoah, we revisit these feelings and we stand tall as American Jews and declare, Am Yisrael Chai, the Jewish people live! We will not bow down or turn away in the face of hate. Throughout our declarations of faith and strength, we remain vigilant. In a review of 2018 … [Read more...]
Sinat Chinam…Again.
On Saturday night we recognize the destruction of the First and Second Temples, with the holiday of Tisha B'Av, literally the 9th of the month of Av. Often not celebrated by the Reform Movement in decades past, recognizing Tisha B'Av has come to mean that we mourn not only the loss of the unification of the Jewish people in Jerusalem, but also many other dates throughout history in which calamities to the Jewish people occurred: King Edward I's edict, sending the Jews out of England, Expulsion from Spain in 1492, and the start of WWI in 1914. When Israel became a State in 1948, there was talk of stopping the recognition of this holiday, with some believing her statehood meant a restoration of our biblical Holy Land. However, this opinion was in the minority and commemorations continued. On the saddest day of the year, we are called to abstain from activities that bring us joy as we mourn not only destructions of generations, past, but of the suffering that continues in the world … [Read more...]
A Great Use of Your Time to Fight Antisemitism in Georgia
Dear Temple Emanu-El, The Jews of Georgia had a big 'win' this week! For those of you who were awake this past Yom Kippur for the sermon, we talked about the importance of passing HB30, known as the 'antisemitism bill' through the Georgia State Legislature. The previous two years we were unsuccessful in this effort, but this past Thursday, HB30 passed overwhelmingly in the Georgia State House and Senate. Many Jewish organizations have put significant time and energy into lobbying elected officials, meeting with them, and explaining how HB30 will increase our (sense of) protection as Antisemitism continues to dramatically rise. (An important note, out of all the Georgia State legislators, only one is Jewish (Esther Panitch, House District 51). The American Jewish Committee (AJC) really quarterbacked this effort, and I am VERY PROUD to say that Temple Emanu-El did our part. Almost 400 of you were at our Legislative Shabbat dinner & service on January 12th, where we hosted more than … [Read more...]
“I lift my lamp beside the golden door”
Have you ever seen Temple Emanu-El congregants wearing TE tie-dye t-shirts atop a bedazzled blue and white float in the Dunwoody 4th of July parade? Tomorrow you will! Like everything at Temple Emanu-El, nothing just appears out of thin air, and we appreciate the Summerfield, Levy, and Bieber families (and the rest of the crew!) for building this symbol of our active Jewish presence in our local community with their time, effort, and joy. As a statement, this is important. I’m proud of Temple Emanu-El for who we are, what we stand for, and the good that we do. We are Jewish-Americans, and there is no better place for us to celebrate our hyphenated identity than on America’s Independence Day. Jews have been in Georgia since before America was a country, and we continue to participate, and to lead, in every corner of civic life. One of our continuous self-proclaimed responsibilities is to work towards, and to protect, the freedom of all Americans, regardless of their beliefs, color, … [Read more...]
