Letter From The Co-Chairs Welcome to the second edition of Tikkun Olam Times, a living, breathing space to inform, educate and advocate for Social Action and Justice. Since the first edition of TOT on June 9, a head-spinning number of events and decisions have occurred. Demonstrations urging racial equality swept the nation and the world. The Supreme Court determined that it is, “unlawful for an employer to fail to hire or discharge an individual … because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex or national origin.” The Supreme Court also upheld the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Here at home, the Georgia House and Senate passed a Hate Crimes Bill, HB426, that Governor Kemp signed into law. All of this activity while we are still in the middle of a global pandemic. Wendy Frank & Julie Mokotoff At Carnival With A Cause March 8, 2020 Against this backdrop of challenge and change, Judaism provides a constructive framework to guide our thoughts … [Read more...]

Closing My Rings This Thanksgiving
When I first wore my Apple Watch I was obsessed with "closing my rings." The watch has daily health goals, standing for a certain number of hours, moving for a certain number of minutes, and burning a certain number of calories. Completing all three goals closes the rings and tiny fireworks go off on the watch face. It's not possible to "close your rings" in one 30-minute workout. Meeting these fitness goals requires consistent effort over the course of a day. A rabbi two thousand years ago, Rabbi Meir, began a Jewish system like my Apple Watch. Rather than a focus on exercise, Rabbi Meir's goal was to recite a certain number of blessings each day. He believed that achieving Jewish fitness happened by reciting 100 blessings each day.* Now, unless you're going to read off a list at the end of each day to meet your goal-a pretty uninspiring way to bless-saying 100 blessings in a day requires constant work and attention. While we may not say 100 blessings each day, Jewish tradition … [Read more...]

CHAI HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE KICKS OFF Participate in Temple Emanu-El’s annual High Holiday food drive, and you will make a difference in the fight against hunger. All donations go to the Community Assistance Center (CAC) and the Food Pantry at Jewish Family & Career Services (JF&CS). Both directly serve food-insecure families and individuals in our community. Also known as Project Isaiah, this year the drive has been renamed the Chai Holiday Food Drive, as we focus on “chai”, the Hebrew word for “life”. And since “chai” is symbolized by the number 18, we’re asking congregants to consider donating from 18 nutritionally dense, non-perishable foods. Foods to consider include: canned meats canned soup canned chili canned vegetables canned tuna canned stews canned beans quinoa rice oatmeal & other cereals juice boxes or cans fruit cups peanut butter & jelly canned spaghetti sauce & pastas boxed pasta meals (like mac ‘n’ cheese) You can drop off your donation … [Read more...]
Headlines from Israel
With so much going on in the United States, Georgia, and Atlanta, the pandemic, Passover just around the corner, and all the other things going on in our lives... we may have missed some of the headlines coming out of Israel in recent weeks - and they're a really big deal!. Like the fact that Israel is holding its fourth election in just two years on March 23rd! Or the fact that the Supreme Court just issued a HUGE ruling in favor of recognizing conversions performed by the Reform and Conservative Movements in Israel, resulting in folks who are Jews-by-choice to receive Israeli citizenship (which they previously were unable to do)! OR the fact that Keren Kayemet L'Yisrael (KKL, the Israeli Jewish National Fund, which has no connection to the JNF based out of New York), is planning to purchase land in Area C of the West Bank! I could write three books diving into all three of these topics, but today, I want to call our attention to the issue of the KKL (with articles at the bottom … [Read more...]
