College costs are rising and JELF is meeting the need by providing no-interest loans to Jewish students who demonstrate the need for their higher education, which includes undergrad, graduate, vocational, or technical school. JELF loan application for the 2024-25 academic year is currently open from now through April 30th. They also offer images for social media and more at jelf.org/share. In Awe of the Power of the Group
There is a special blessing from the Talmud that we are supposed to say when we encounter a large group of people. We are supposed to say: Blessed is the Wise Knower of Hidden Truths who sees that each person’s knowledge is different from the next, just like each person’s appearance is different from the rest. When I got to camp this past week, in some ways I was overwhelmed by the large group of people and activities that were going on. But this text grounded me in the idea that each person had something to teach me and that each individual at camp helps to make the entire camp team. The camp experience is about the capacity of the individual AND the collective. There are individuals stars, but at the end of the day, camp is about coming together as a kehillah (community), to be part of something larger than ourselves. From Camp to Israel and Everywhere in Between
While the synagogue may "slow down" over the summer as your rabbis are busy writing programs, education classes, and sermons, we're taking some time to recharge, study, and vision too. Meanwhile, another reason we switch to a new pace is that many of our congregants are enjoying their own summer speed of taking day trips or vacations, sending kids to summer camps (day, overnight, Jewish, sport, art, music, etc.). Some are working (full-time, part-time, as needed, in the home, outside of the home). Others are retired and enjoying the warm weather. One thing we know that still happens all summer long: Judaism! Judaism in the synagogue is alive and well with the casual vibes of our summer services and Torah studies. Your rabbis are here to elevate your spirit all summer.
