During our Diamond Family Religious School 3rd through 8th-grade tefillah (prayer service) this past Sunday, I invited the children of our congregation to take a moment for silent prayer. I want each of you to take a few deep breaths, to feel your feet on the floor in this holy space and to open up your heart to God and the universe. This is a special place where you can have a sacred conversation with yourself and the world. This sanctuary is here for you. Take a few moments and talk to God with the prayers of your heart. When you’ve finished your prayers, please take a seat and be respectful of your friends who might still be praying. Then it was silent — super, super silent. As I looked out at the kids, a few of them sat down fairly quickly — that’s to be expected. What I didn’t expect was the number of kids whose eyes were shut tight, their eyebrows narrowed, and their mouths moving ever so slightly as they were completely enveloped in deep prayer. At every grade level, … [Read more...]

Welcome to Our New Shinshin
Temple Emanu-El and Shinshinim of Atlanta* are working hard to build personal relationships between Israel and America. Last year you might have seen our Shinshin, Omer, around the building during Religious School or out with our kids at youth events. Omer did an incredible job of connecting our youth to Israel by being an amazing role model and engaging with the kids about all things Israel. As much as Omer taught our community about Israel, so too did we teach Omer about the incredible ways that practicing Judaism as a Reform Community can enhance his own identity. Omer shared: Before I came to the Temple Emanu-El community I only saw myself as Israeli. Having learned the beautiful way that your community practices Judaism, I am now proud to share that I am both Jewish and Israeli, I’m finally proud of my Jewish identity. Our community will stay in touch with Omer for many years to come and now we look forward to welcoming our next Shinshin for the 2019-2020 school year, Nicole … [Read more...]
What was the miracle?
For more than 1,000 years, the dreidels that Jews spun around the globe had the same four letters on them: ‘nun’, ‘gimel’, ‘Heh’, ‘shin’. These were an acronym for the Hebrew words – Nes Gadol Hiya Sham, A great Miracle Happened There. Some say it was the miracle of the oil, others say it was the military miracle of the Macabees success. But then, in 1948, a new dreidle appeared on the scene that did not have a ‘shin’, but rather a ‘peh’. For with the recreation of the modern state of Israel, the new Jews living in the land adapted the motto to Nes Gadol Hiya Po (with the letter Peh). For once again, for the first time in millennia, Jews had sovereign control of the same land for which our ancestors had fought. And with this change of letter, there was a subtle third option of what miracle we were spinning dreidel for: the State of Israel itself. Hundreds of Jewish generations prayed for it, teenagers left the Pale of Settlement to drain swamps for it, and our sons and … [Read more...]
All Eyes on Rafah…
On May 26th, the IDF used precision munitions to kill two senior Hamas militants. Unfortunately, Gazan civilians also died as a result of a secondary explosion in a Hamas munitions depot. Yet again, as always, the world news immediately reported a number of 25+, 35+, or 45+ deaths as data given by the Hamas-run Health Ministry. And soon, the news agencies will walk back the source of the fire that caused the deaths. War is awful, and no Jew celebrates death--even of their enemies. The death of innocent civilians--children, women, and men--is all the more terrible. The IDF made a precision strike 1.7 kilometers--one mile--from the encampment. This means that the IDF is investigating if there were other types of fuels or weapons stored next to a civilian encampment. These investigations take time. And yet, according to Vox.com, over 40 million people have shared a now-viral AI-generated image that spells out All Eyes on Rafah. The implication is that the world is watching what … [Read more...]
