On every flight to Israel that I’ve ever been on the entire plane breaks out into applause upon landing. Why is that? The only other instance that I’ve seen an airplane full of people applaud like this is when the pilot touches us down after a truly hazardous flight full of fear and turbulence. It seems as if we clap out of gratitude for being delivered from danger to safety. When this happens, are we clapping for the pilot? For The Divine? For ourselves and the lives that we still get to live? Maybe all three… The sounds of our hands earnestly coming together in a brief staccato burst are, in a fashion, a spontaneous prayer by a large group of total strangers who share only a departure point, but ultimately, a destiny together. Like these bumpy flights that make us catch our breath, when we vigorously clap our hands together upon every arrival in Tel Aviv, are we too, (those who understand the origins of our long Jewish journey), engaging in some sort of primal prayer with our … [Read more...]

Diamond Family Religious School Pre-Kindergarten Program
The Diamond Family Religious School at Temple Emanu-El is proud to launch our PreK3 and PreK Programs. We want to welcome you and your children to a time of stimulating Jewish educational experiences. Children will participate in exploratory activities that use all their senses to experience their world. These programs are for kids who are getting ready for school, building their community, and learning through play (3 and 4 year olds). These children will have hands-on learning with activity centers and group time to learn about holidays, Torah, the synagogue, blessings, and more. Teachers introduce the Jewish holidays to children in much the same way they approach curriculum, by making it relevant, meaningful and accessible to young learners. There will be art, movement, music, and fun! Stories, symbols, songs and even the tastes of holidays allow our students to begin exploration of Jewish traditions and values while creating their sacred Jewish community. PreK3 Sundays … [Read more...]
It’s Time To Bear Witness
This morning, I woke up and did something I don't normally do. I watched the news. I'm more of a morning news "reader" than I am a news "watcher." The images of various college campuses moved me to want to watch and to listen to what was happening. The environment was loud. The noises sounded like a war zone. The right to peaceful protest is a fundamental right in America, but on many campuses, these protests are no longer peaceful. Repeated calls of "Intifada now" and "From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free" endanger the lives of the Jewish people. These chants are uneducated and call for the end of Israel and Jews. How quickly the world forgets. Today is day 209 of the war, a blip in time for some and an eternity for others. We are 210 days from the last ceasefire with Hamas. On October 7th, Hamas broke the ceasefire. Hamas, the terrorist organization and governing body of Gaza, entered the homes of sleeping Israelis and peaceful gatherings of young adults and … [Read more...]
Want a Life of Blessing? The Choice is Yours.
The rabbinic imagination is incredible sometimes. For those of you who have learned Talmud with me, you know that each page of Talmud is as likely to contain pearls of wisdom as fantastical tales of beasts, the Heavens, and the role of human beings. This week we read in our Torah portion the ultimate affirmation of free will and the rabbis take it a step further: See, this day I set before you blessing and curse: blessing, if you obey the commandments of Adonai your God that I enjoin upon you this day; and curse, if you do not obey the commandments of Adonai your God. We are the ones to choose our actions. No one but ourselves can make the right decision. God tells us to choose between blessing or curse. But the rabbis go a step further to say that we can make a new choice every day. In the rabbinic mind, from when we go to sleep to when we wake up, in that time, we enter an entirely new world. The prayer called, “Yotzeir Or,” said in the morning just before Shema, affirms this: In … [Read more...]
Turn it Again
Our Rabbinic Sage with the funniest name, Ben Bag Bag, used to say, “Turn it, and turn it, for everything is therein.”* Meaning, “Study the Torah, then study it again, because we always have something to learn from the text.” Friends, it is that exciting time of year! We have warmed up our muscles and taken the twenty minutes to roll our Torah scroll all the way from the end of Deuteronomy back to the beginning of Genesis. We have literally turned the scroll, turned the scroll, and turned it again so that we can start anew. Whether you’re a Torah study regular, you pop in and out, or you’ve never been before, the beginning is the PERFECT time to hop on in! We’re a judgment free group open to all levels of learners interested in expanding their Jewish knowledge. There’s a prayer we have the chance to say every morning, Eilu D’varim, which goes like this: These are the things that are limitless, Of which a person enjoys the fruit of the world, while the principal remains in the world to … [Read more...]
