The Diamond Family Religious School at Temple Emanu-El is proud to launch our PreK3 and PreK Programs. We want to welcome you and your children to a time of stimulating Jewish educational experiences. Children will participate in exploratory activities that use all their senses to experience their world. These programs are for kids who are getting ready for school, building their community, and learning through play (3 and 4 year olds). These children will have hands-on learning with activity centers and group time to learn about holidays, Torah, the synagogue, blessings, and more. Teachers introduce the Jewish holidays to children in much the same way they approach curriculum, by making it relevant, meaningful and accessible to young learners. There will be art, movement, music, and fun! Stories, symbols, songs and even the tastes of holidays allow our students to begin exploration of Jewish traditions and values while creating their sacred Jewish community. PreK3 Sundays … [Read more...]

Want a Life of Blessing? The Choice is Yours.
The rabbinic imagination is incredible sometimes. For those of you who have learned Talmud with me, you know that each page of Talmud is as likely to contain pearls of wisdom as fantastical tales of beasts, the Heavens, and the role of human beings. This week we read in our Torah portion the ultimate affirmation of free will and the rabbis take it a step further: See, this day I set before you blessing and curse: blessing, if you obey the commandments of Adonai your God that I enjoin upon you this day; and curse, if you do not obey the commandments of Adonai your God. We are the ones to choose our actions. No one but ourselves can make the right decision. God tells us to choose between blessing or curse. But the rabbis go a step further to say that we can make a new choice every day. In the rabbinic mind, from when we go to sleep to when we wake up, in that time, we enter an entirely new world. The prayer called, “Yotzeir Or,” said in the morning just before Shema, affirms this: In … [Read more...]
Turn it Again
Our Rabbinic Sage with the funniest name, Ben Bag Bag, used to say, “Turn it, and turn it, for everything is therein.”* Meaning, “Study the Torah, then study it again, because we always have something to learn from the text.” Friends, it is that exciting time of year! We have warmed up our muscles and taken the twenty minutes to roll our Torah scroll all the way from the end of Deuteronomy back to the beginning of Genesis. We have literally turned the scroll, turned the scroll, and turned it again so that we can start anew. Whether you’re a Torah study regular, you pop in and out, or you’ve never been before, the beginning is the PERFECT time to hop on in! We’re a judgment free group open to all levels of learners interested in expanding their Jewish knowledge. There’s a prayer we have the chance to say every morning, Eilu D’varim, which goes like this: These are the things that are limitless, Of which a person enjoys the fruit of the world, while the principal remains in the world to … [Read more...]
Hebrew, Hebrew, Hebrew
I once attended a Shabbat dinner that was filled with the tastiest of challot, fish, chicken, vegetables, delightful individuals, and good conversation. Things felt very comfortable until we came to the end of the meal. That's when we took the time to thank God for providing us with the food we had just consumed and satiating our hunger - Birkat HaMazon. I thought to myself, "Ooooo, how wonderful, I loved singing Birkat HaMazon at NFTY events, I haven't heard it in so long." But a minute or so into the prayer I realized we had departed from the words that I recognized. That's because we were doing the "full version" of the prayer, rather than the adapted "shorter version." So I sat there quietly as everyone around me smiled and sang. I'd come in when it was the part I knew and then go back to smiling awkwardly pretending to look at the pages of the birkon*. As we were walking home from the dinner, I sort of pulled a friend aside and said, "hey, sooooo I didn't really know that … [Read more...]
Shouldn’t Every Week Be Green Week?
Shouldn't every week be Green Week? The short answer is, "yes!" This is why we continue to emphasize Temple Emanu-El's recent steps toward the process of continual and consistent "greening" of the congregation. From lightbulbs to plates, paper usage and coffee pods every week is Green Week as we try to lower our carbon footprint. Shm'irat haTeva, Preserving and Guarding Nature is a bright and shining value of the Jewish people. From texts about planting trees for the next generation to calls to live within our means, Judaism is very clear that taking care of our Earth: land, water, air, and people, is of the utmost importance.…and so we give you: Green Week! - Our yearly kick in the tuchas to set aside time to learn about the environment and to evaluate our impact. Green Week may change every year on the secular calendar, but that's because we align this valued week with Tu Bishvat, our holiday celebrating the birthday of the trees. January 12th, hear from Joanna … [Read more...]
