Youth Groups
Youth Life at Temple Emanu-El Temple Emanu-El youth programs bring the excitement of immersive Jewish experiences to kids and teens to strengthen their Jewish identity and instill Reform Jewish values for the next generations. We strengthen Jewish connections and knowledge for the entire family through meaningful and relevant programs and engagement. Our goal is to create an exciting and positive atmosphere for young adults to find their place in the Jewish community. K-2 Youth Our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd-grade youth programming focuses on the Jewish values of "kef v'Ruach", fun and spirit. Our activities create positive connections between the kids, their rabbis, and the Temple Emanu-El. Our K-2 programming always takes place on Sunday after Religious School has ended (12:30 pm). Bar/Bat Mitzvah
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Handbook Download Your journey begins the year you turn 10 by choosing a date to stand on the bimah as you become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at age 13. Throughout the next few years leading up to the actual service, you and your family will attend family learning sessions and informational meetings with other families going through the B'nai Mitzvah process, and personal family meetings with the Rabbi officiating the service. Seven months prior to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah date, students begin weekly meetings with their Cantor and weekly meetings with their tutor. During these meetings, the student will prepare all blessings, prayers, Torah, Haftarah, and English readings. Six weeks preceding the Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the student must attend special sessions with a Rabbi to learn the significance of their Torah portion and to prepare the D'Var Torah. Meetings with the clergy are essential for the student's preparation. Please be sure to download the BM Handbook … [Read more...]

Consecration
Consecration generally takes place at the beginning of kindergarten, or whenever a child begins his or her Jewish education. This is a lovely and meaningful ceremony for children and families alike. A large talit (prayer shawl) may be held over the students while they sing a song or recite the Sh'ma (the declaration of Jewish faith). The children are blessed by the clergy and are often given a certificate and a miniature Torah. How wonderful to being a child's Jewish education with a celebration. You shall love the Eternal your God with all your mind, with all your strength, with all your being. Set these words, which I command you this day, upon your heart. Teach them faithfully to your children; speak of them in your home and on your way, when you lie down and when you rise up. (Deuteronomy 6:5-9) These words, which form the beginning of the Ve'ahavta prayer, teach us that love of God and learning are closely related. The education of a Jewish child is a joint venture, shared … [Read more...]
