Beth Blick Religious School Director Expand After being a member of The Temple Emanu-El Congregation for 5 years, Beth joined The Diamond Family Religious School teaching staff in 2011. Beth has been a public school teacher since 2001 and was excited to bring her educational talents to the Religious School. Beth became the Director of Education in 2015 and has been working diligently to update and modernize the Religious School by creating a more interactive approach to learning Hebrew as well as Judaics. Beth hails from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and graduated from the University of Alabama. Beth, her husband, Stephen, and their two children, Mason and Ryan, live in Marietta, Georgia. Shouldn’t Every Week Be Green Week?
Shouldn't every week be Green Week? The short answer is, "yes!" This is why we continue to emphasize Temple Emanu-El's recent steps toward the process of continual and consistent "greening" of the congregation. From lightbulbs to plates, paper usage and coffee pods every week is Green Week as we try to lower our carbon footprint. Shm'irat haTeva, Preserving and Guarding Nature is a bright and shining value of the Jewish people. From texts about planting trees for the next generation to calls to live within our means, Judaism is very clear that taking care of our Earth: land, water, air, and people, is of the utmost importance.…and so we give you: Green Week! - Our yearly kick in the tuchas to set aside time to learn about the environment and to evaluate our impact. Protests for Truth Not for Power
Korach is one of my favorite Torah portions of the year, not just because it was the parasha I read for my Bar Mitzvah eighteen years ago, but it is a parasha with lots of action. While many of us are away on summer vacations, the Torah reading cycle has some of the most important and exciting portions of the year. In this week’s installment of biblical drama, a group of stiff-necked Israelites led by Korach, Dotan, and Aviram rise up against Moses claiming that Moses is lording over the people being an unjust leader. The attempted coup d’etat fails in spectacular fashion. Moses holds a sacrificial competition between Korach and himself; whomever God chooses will be the leader of the Israelites. Inevitably, God chooses Moses, and Korach, Aviram, Dotan, and all if their followers are swallowed by the earth! The ending for Korach and his band of rebels is unforgettable.
