When my eldest son, Mac, was four years old, he was very into everything outer-space: rockets & planets, martians & the moon. One night, as we were reading one of his space books, in mid-sentence he stopped me with some urgency. "Papa, outer space is above the sky?" "Yes," I told him. "But what is above 'outer space'?" "More space," I told him, "and stars, and suns and planets." "Yes," he said getting frustrated, "BUT what is beyond all of that?" What is beyond all of that...? I did not (and still don't) have an answer for him; but this week's parshah gives some insight as to why he felt the need to ask this type of question. It is a need that, some would argue, every person in the world who has ever lived desires to fulfill. Some compare it to bird migration, or the compass needle seeking to find North, or even the ability to love. Torah tells us (Gen 1:27) that man & woman were made B'zelem Elohim, in God's image. Judaism tells us that this refers to our very … [Read more...]

“If I am not for the bees, who will bee for me?”
Our sage Hillel should have said these words: "If I am not for the bees, who will bee for me?" A Buzz Worthy Announcement In the next few weeks, you will notice some new workers around Temple Emanu-El. These workers will be growing food in our garden, helping flowers to bloom on the property, and making lots and lots of honey! Yes, you guessed it, we're welcoming two hives of honeybees to Temple Emanu-El this Spring. Why is Temple Emanu-El bringing honeybees onto our campus? Honeybees are crucial to human life; without honeybees, there would be no us! As a congregation that works to heal our world, hosting honeybees is one of the best and easiest ways to do that. While we may be able to taste a bit of Temple Emanu-El honey, a honeybee is worth 10 or 20 times the value of its honey. Honeybees pollinate ONE-THIRD of all crops in the United States. By hosting bees on our campus, we are adding more pollinators to the Sandy Springs/Dunwoody area. We hope you will be inspired to bring a … [Read more...]

We are still on that journey
These last few days in our home have been a flurry of activity getting ready for Passover, which begins tomorrow night. Furniture is being carried up from the basement, the silverware is being polished, the kitchen is on overdrive with amazing aromas decorating our home. The plan for the seder is coming together, as well as our last minute guest list. Relatives are arriving. The kids are bringing home their Pesach crafts. Costco now greets me with “welcome back, Spike.” As the sun sets tomorrow night, bringing in Shabbat and the 14th of Nisan, we will gather ‘round our tables and enact the sacred drama through the Haggadah; knowing in our hearts that the Exodus was not the end…but rather, just the beginning. Whether you are hosting or hosted, your 1st seder or your 100th, please know that you are engaged in something truly sacred. You are, through song and prayer, tapping into millennia of Jewish experience. You are, through game and story, creating Jewish memory for yourself and … [Read more...]
