Chavurah Program

Chavurah comes from the Hebrew word “chaver” meaning friend or fellowship. Each Chavurah is a small group of Temple members with common interests who come together to socialize, learn and/or celebrate Jewish life. The purpose is to create a smaller, more intimate community within the larger Temple.

A Chavurah gets together regularly, typically every 4-8 weeks. The group may meet in members’ homes or go somewhere for an event.

Each Chavurah defines its own focus and plans its own activities, but many groups have social and educational get-togethers and outings (such as dinners, picnics, sporting events, movie or theater performances), holiday and Shabbat celebrations and social action initiatives. Many Chavurot attend Temple events, religious services or social action programs together.

A Chavurah usually has between 8 and 20 members. However, there is no hard and fast rule.

Because it’s a great way to make new friends, meet other congregants and become more active at Temple Emanu-El!

New groups are formed throughout the year. A member of the Chavurah Committee will contact you when your Chavurah has been formed.
