During a year of mourning, it is customary to recite mourner’s kaddish throughout the first 11 months. If you are in your first year of mourning, we invite you to be surrounded by your Temple Emanu-El community each Shabbat.
After the first 11 months, on the anniversary of the death of a loved one, one would light a Yartzeit candle at home and then attend services that evening or on the nearest Shabbat to recite Kaddish. One would also recite Kaddish during the Yizkor services that occur on Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret (the 8th night of Sukkot), the last night of Passover, and the second day of Shavuot.
