Building A Community of Congregational Singers
December 8, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Have you ever sat in our congregation wanting to sing along with the liturgy, but feeling shy about your voice and how it might sound? Have you found the Hebrew intimidating and are not sure how to sing along without it?
Do you feel at times you would like to participate more fully in our musical life and prayer services?
Are you a lover of singing; considering joining our adult choir, Shir HaEsh, but have never sung in a choir before and are unsure of taking that next step?
Nearly 99% of our liturgy is built upon melodies that span thousands of years; this tradition of intertwined music and text makes our services beautiful, meaningful and holy, yet is challenging for modern congregations. A.J. Heschel explains that “song is the most intimate expression of [humankind].” There is something otherworldly, unique and yes, even intimidating about allowing our voices to rise outside of ourselves, because it is as if our soul is extending forth as well.
Come explore the power of the niggun (a wordless melody) and what it means to join together as a community and congregation in that space of power, prayer and song, and how a simple melody sung together by community big or small can transcend God’s presence, holiness, and prayer.
