Becoming Bar or Bat Mitzvah is the first step on the journey of Jewish adulthood, but we know that Jewish learning and leadership is a lifelong endeavor. As we grow, we pause to celebrate and recognize individuals who confirm their commitment to a life lived Jewishly. This year, Temple Emanu-El is starting an adult confirmation program for any and all adults who want to take their Jewish learning to the next level. Continued HERE.

Chevrah Torah (Torah Study) Saturday Morning
9:00am in the Library
In Judaism, the study of our sacred texts is considered an act towards Divine Connection on par with prayer. It is rare that one has the time to be “spiritually selfish,” meaning to take the time to further one’s own spiritual development. Chevrah Torah is an opportunity to explore, struggle and delve in a nurturing and intimate environment.
Hosted in the intimate setting of our library, surrounded by learners of every age and various backgrounds, our Torah study lifts up our sacred stories to examine the existential and timeless societal quandaries of the human condition. No formal knowledge of Judaism or Hebrew is necessary; every study session is made accessible through commentary and translation.
To register, click on the class time you prefer.

Jewish Mindfulness Meditation: Elul
Chaplain Marita Anderson
Elul is the Hebrew month during which we engage in hashbon hanefesh, or accounting of the soul, in preparation for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is a time for softening our hearts; deepening our compassion – our compassion for others and for ourselves. Offering forgiveness and asking forgiveness. And feeling a special relaxed closeness to the Divine.

Write an Ethical Will
Rabbi Max Miller
For millennia, Jews have been passing their wisdom and stories down to the next generation with ethical wills. An ethical will is the way to leave your life lessons and stories for your family after you're gone. Learn about this sacred tradition with Rabbi Max and practice writing your own—it’s never too early or too late! This class is via Zoom.

In the Beginning...Where Were You?
Rabbi Rachael Miller
Every year we begin anew and we start from Genesis 1:1 on the Shabbat following the marathon of the High Holy Day Season. Let’s be honest, by that point, many of us are pretty tired! Perhaps it takes us a few weeks to get back to the synagogue and by then the opening chapters are the book of Genesis have already flown by! Alternatively, you are there that first week, but we only focus on one tiny part of these robust portions. So let’s go back and study, I mean, really study the opening biblical stories of our Torah! From the Creation narratives to Adam and Eve, Noah, the Tower of Babel, and so much more!

Stories of Music
Cantor Lauren Adesnik
Let's journey together on musical adventure! We take flight with Jewish music 101, uncovering the mystery: what makes Jewish music "Jewish?" Our next stop sheds light on the art of prayer as we discover the inextricable connections between music, prayer, community and God. Our final excursion brings us standing upon the stages of the Yiddish Theater, Broadway and Classical Worlds. We will explore some of the brightest lights in Jewish music culture and entertainment. This is a deep dive into lush sound and rich history with light and fun conversation in between.

Why We’re Called Jews
Rabbi Max Miller
No one in the Bible is a “Jew.” Abraham was the first follower of Adonai. Then, God changed Jacob’s name to Israel, and Israel named one his sons Judah—but none of these people were called JEWS. Join Rabbi Max to figure out when we were first called Jews and why.

Want An Amazing Seder?
Rabbi Rachael Miller
In the three weeks leading up to the first-night seder, join Rabbi Rachael for a master course in how to elevate your seder to the next level. Each class will focus on ways to enhance a new section of your seder so that your family and friends can engage with you in a whole new way! Whether you plan to be the seder leader or would like to be an active participant at the seder table, there’s a little something for everyone!

A Spiritual Exploration of the Land of Israel
Rabbi Spike Anderson
Since our inception, the Jewish people have had an intense spiritual connection to the Land of Israel that transcends familial tag-lines and sound bites. It is deep, and it is powerful. Where does this come from? How has it focused our people through exile and diaspora? How do we reconcile the friction between the politics and the sublime, history and destiny, personal and global transformation? Bring you whole self to this conversation, and lets learn together.
