We Will Not Be Silent! Since October 7th, we have learned of the unspeakable horrors and violence the terrorist organization Hamas perpetrated against the Jewish people. It is difficult to comprehend the level of inhumanity. Still, we know that scores of Jews, some not even a year old, and others who are older adults, remain hostage in Gaza. It has been 75 years since the end of the Holocaust that the Jewish people have faced such barbarism. At Temple Emanu-El, we have had time to mourn, comfort, and find strength in our Jewish community. In the aftermath of that black Shabbat, antisemitism has grown exponentially. Tragically, many of us have already witnessed our peers and colleagues, on college campuses and at work, celebrating the murder of innocent civilians. Even worse, we may have already noticed or heard threats against the Jewish community. We will not be silent in the face of antisemitism. We may find ourselves in the uncomfortable position of having to be the sole … [Read more...]

A Message from Your Co-Chairs Giving thanks. Being mindful. Experiencing a sense of gratitude. More than an abundant feast, the American holiday of Thanksgiving reminds us to pause, catch our breath and take stock of our blessings. This year, as many of us gather in-person with family and friends, we have reasons to celebrate. We are part of a caring and devoted Kehillah, our Temple Emanu-El community, each of us connected to the other in some meaningful way. The Social Justice Committee, in particular, has enjoyed a busy and purposeful year. We made significant inroads feeding the food-insecure in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs. We helped vulnerable women and children by providing meals, coats and reading materials. We have done our part to be good stewards of the earth and make better use of our natural resources. We have supported Afghan refugees who are carving out new lives for themselves and their families in the Atlanta area. We have planted daffodils to grow our garden and … [Read more...]
Adult B’nei Mitzvah
Temple Emanu-El is considering offering a six-month Adult B'nei Mitzvah course in the fall of 2024. We want to gauge interest in holding a 6-month Adult B'nei Mitzvah course. This series will be for two kinds of participants. First, someone who has never read from the Torah before. Second, someone who wants to re-learn how to read from the Torah again. This course will ultimately take place one day a week. We'd like to find a day and time that works for most people based on the two time slots to choose from in the 30-second survey. We will spend the first hour of each weekly session studying Hebrew and the second hour taking a deep dive into various Jewish topics. By the end of the program, you will be able to read Hebrew proficiently to read/chant from the Torah! After months of study and hard work, we guarantee that the culminating group b'nei mitzvah ceremony will be a profound and powerful experience. Adult B'nei Mitzvah Class of 5779 D'var Torahs Marina … [Read more...]
