This week, we marked the end of the Shloshim period of mourning, 30 days after the unfathomable atrocities that occurred in Israel on October 7th. At the same time, this is the week we read the Torah portion which includes Abraham's burial of Sarah. Abraham, a stranger who journeyed to Canaan from far away, wants to bury his wife in the ancient city of Hebron. The Hittites, who were then in the land, would have happily given Abraham a burial place free of charge-a generous offer, but one that could be rescinded as it was a gift and not a business deal. Instead, Abraham insists on purchasing a burial plot in a cave in the field of Machpelah facing the city of Hebron. Today, we, Abraham's descendants, are back in our ancient land, and the Hittites are relegated to the history books. Our connection to this sliver of space is ancient and eternal, but over the last 30 days, countless people have questioned our legitimacy in this land. Once again, we must defend our claim that, since the … [Read more...]

How to Have a Meaningful Seder
Pesach is my favorite holiday of the year. I love the food, storytelling, and singing. However, most of all, I love that the Seder house, no matter the size of the home or the company, always feels packed with loved ones and family. No matter how we celebrate, this Pesach will feel very different. The Four Questions take on an entirely new and added meaning this year. Why is this Seder different from all other Seders? Let us count the ways. Instead of celebrating Pesach with only our immediate family and friends, we will be able to celebrate with people far and wide, as a Temple Emanu-El community, and in ways we have never done before. Yes, we will miss the hugs and kisses from family and friends, but we will make up for that with the smiles, laughter, and good discussions that will fill the airwaves this year. The story of Pesach has an eternal meaning to it. The story of a people once enslaved, now free from tyranny is one that has resonated with the Western world for hundreds of … [Read more...]

Grief
Grief comes in many forms and may impact mourners in different ways and at different times in the mourning process. Although there are formal stages of mourning through Jewish tradition (shiva, shloshim, the first year, yahrtzeits, and Yizkor), sometimes these stages don't always align with the way we process grief and we could use a little extra help. If you are struggling, please reach out to our clergy and/or we recommend that you reach out to the Atlanta-based organization, AgeWell Atlanta. This organization is a collaborative partnership to help older adults and caregivers navigate the aging process. Grief counseling is just one of the many areas covered by this organization. Mazal Tov! Mazal Tots!
When a family raising Jewish children welcomes a new child into their home we often greet the news with a hearty: "Mazal Tov!" Hence, the inspiration for the name of a program we soft-launched this past Spring called Mazal Tots - Temple Emanu-El's very own Baby and Me class. In the 2023-2024 school year, we are ready for a full launch with THREE cohorts to choose from. Mazal Tots is unique. It is a program designed to foster connections, provide resources, and celebrate the beautiful journey of parenthood. With dedicated age-specific sections, we cater to the needs of families with: Infants (0-5 months) Movers and groovers (6-17 months) Toddlers (18-35 months) Sessions are guided by Jackie Perilman, a professional with over 15 years of experience with early intervention and preschool-aged children specializing in language and communication skills. Our program runs on Sunday mornings right out of our MJCCA Schiff classrooms on the lower level of the building. Okay, so we … [Read more...]
