This Friday night we will celebrate Veteran’s Day through Shabbat services. Jews have long served honorably in our armed services. We have stood tall for the best of America’s ideals and, too often, we have paid the ultimate price. In this we are no different than other groups that make up America, but this fact itself is something to lionize: that we Jews, through our brave women and men who served and continue to serve, do our part with open eyes and valor. The same would be true for those who have served, or are active, in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Our Torah is full of exemplars who were forced to fight for their land, and in defense of their loved ones; including Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Deborah, and King David (the list is long, these are just a few). Social Action-Local Action Mini Conference
Sunday, October 22 9:30am-12:00pm Temple Emanu-El is starting a dialogue on pressing topics such as poverty, hate, and addiction in the Metro Atlanta area at the first annual mini-conference, Social Action Local Action. It's free and open to the public on Oct 22nd at 9:30am-12:00pm. The conference will include three panels: the first panel is on hunger and poverty led by Community Assistance Center CEO Tamara Carrera and Atlanta Food Bank’s Director of Government Affairs Lauren Waits, the second panel is on hate and anti-semitism led by Lauren Menis of Atlanta Initiative Against Anti-Semitism, Judy Marx of the Interfaith Community Initiatives, and Pastor Chianti Harris of the Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church, and the third panel is on addiction and mental illness led by Alyza Milrad of The Berman Center, a newly opened addiction center in Atlanta, and Lucy Gainor-Hall from Mary Hall Freedom House, a non-profit that rehabilitates and supports … [Read more...]
