Connect What is the spiritual background of your early years? I was brought up to question and wonder in a home that fostered curiosity and exploration. As a child, when I asked "why," I never heard that something happened "just because." Instead, and in true Jewish fashion, my question was often met with a follow-up question asking me to reflect back what I thought could be the answer. Even when the way I saw the world differed from my parents, their questions led me down a spiritual journey. As an only child, I often entertained myself: reading, imagining, exploring music, or playing outside. Through this free play, I recall thinking about the spiritual aspects of life at a young age. There was a space at the top of our staircase where the light shined through the window in the morning leaving a circle of warmth on the carpet where I would sit and stare at the rainbow the light left behind. In those meditative moments I would think about God and even feel a sense of comfort … [Read more...]

Who Do You Know Who Has Been Looking for a Taste of Judaism?
Part of Temple Emanu-El’s mission to be a welcoming space for all is to help those who wish to deepen their connection to Judaism. Many of us have spent years in religious school, adult education courses, or in weekly Shabbat morning Chevre Torah. Whether we realize it or not, we hold a wealth of Jewish knowledge when it comes to culture, community, and faith; however, there are also those who are seeking a taste of Judaism for the first time. Many of these individuals come from different religious backgrounds and have fallen in love and created families with members of the Jewish people. Maybe these interfaith families want to introduce their spouse to the basic ideas of Jewish culture, faith, and community. Some of these individuals are prospective Jews-by-choice, those who want to formally join the Jewish people through the sacred act of conversion. Others who are looking for a taste of Judaism are our friends and neighbors from other faith traditions who have always been curious … [Read more...]
Generations of Learning
For generations and hundreds of years, on the eve of Shavuot, Jews from across the globe have gathered in their communities for an evening of study. This evening of study, which often goes late until the wee hours of the morning, is set up to prepare us to "receive" the Torah once more, like we did at Mount Sinai. We can visualize the generations past, sometimes en masse, coming together in loud crowded rooms, as well as the times in history when perhaps only a family was able to gather in secret to study throughout the night. The value of family study and passing on our traditions from generation to generation is a very prominent one here at Temple Emanu-El. I received an email just this week from a congregational family that has three generations at TE, and they were very excited that ALL THREE generations would be studying Hebrew this Spring and into the summer with fellow Temple Emanu-El members. I couldn't help but pause when I read the email, what a BEAUTIFUL thing for THREE … [Read more...]
“My Brother’s Keeper?”
Marita and I recently took a 36 hour mission to the Arizona-Mexico border to see ‘the immigration issue’ with our own eyes. We privately toured with the U.S. Border Patrol, visited with families as they were released from Detention Centers, and spent time in a Detention Center hearing stories that I will never forget. We traveled to Arizona at our own expense because we felt a raw need to know…beyond what the various news coverage might tell us. We were compelled to witness because issues of immigration are a real-time juxtaposition of ethics, politics, and Jewish values with very real consequences to our identity, and of our collective soul. One of the most famous lines from Torah is spoken by Cain to God after fratricide. God asks Cain about his (dead) brother Abel, to which Cain famously retorts, “Am I my brother’s keeper”” (Genesis 4:9) From this, our sages pose the questions of who are our brothers and sisters, and who is not? Can we ‘keep’ everyone like a … [Read more...]

These texts may make us uncomfortable, and yet they are a part of our Jewish canon, our sacred texts. What do we do when these pieces of text describe something so far from sacred? Why have we spent so many years passing over these stories? How has … [Read more...]
