Believe it or not, Passover is around the corner! Above all else, Pesach lionizes Jewish memory. We cannot overstate the importance of remembering our emancipation from Egypt, and how our story has shaped the Western world in ways that are profound. But, I’m talking about a different type of memory- the memory that you have of joy around the seder table, of recipes and aromas, of Mah Nishtanas and laughter. Purposefully, much of the seder is designed to evoke questions, so that we can better engage our children (and ourselves) in The Story. The Exodus that happened once upon a time, and, like ripples in a still pond, continues in every age where Jews reside. In an effort to make the seder fun, we have the tradition of hiding the afikomen (Greek for ‘dessert’). Symbolic of the splitting of the Sea of Reeds, the birth canal of the Israelite nation, early in the service, the middle piece of matza is split in half. (split like the sea…get it?) One-half remains on the table, while the … [Read more...]

Empty of Ego, Filled With God
In the Hasidic text, Birkat Avraham[i], Rabbi Shmuel B. Nachman speaks about the moment of intense despair that some people, at some point feel… a despair that despite your efforts, you have nothing to show for it…not materially, not spiritually, not socially. Rabbi Shmuel claims that this moment can be, not the nadir of spiritual connection to God, but actually a ‘summit cornerstone’ – for it is in the utter despair that we are as closely empty of ego that we will ever get. If we are open to God in those moments, there is more of us for God to fill. Think of a vessel, the more empty it is, the more space there is for something else… which, can be, if we realize that even in our despair we are in a Holy Place, even if we did not know it… truly Kaddosh…sacred. The Jacob narrative in Torah, these next two weeks of parshiot, relay the story of a man (a teen really) who has made tremendous mistakes, horrific errors in judgement, and committed acts of betrayal against his father and … [Read more...]

Torah for the Sake of Torah
Every Saturday morning at about 8:45 a.m. you will find a group milling about the Colbert Library. Some will chat about services the night before, others about sports, and others about the problems of the world. Some will grab a hot coffee or tea, others a little nosh, and still others will pull up into their regular (or not so regular) seat and enjoy a few moments of quiet. There will be welcoming smiles, morning greetings, and an amazing energy builds. At 9:00 a.m. a member of the clergy team will say “Shabbat Shalom” and we will dive into the portion of the week. One of our newest and youngest Torah study regulars, a 7th-grader who, after fulfilling her required attendance has continued to join us almost weekly, shared with me a beautiful reason as to why Torah study means so much to her. She pointed out that, when at school, she has to raise her hand and be called upon, that she feels pressure to know all the answers, and that the topics aren’t always her favorite. However, when … [Read more...]
